EPION 2013 Conference

This year's EPION (formerly OWGEPI) Conference 2013 was held at the Sheraton Toronto Centre hotel on Queen Street, Toronto. Over 320 registrants attended two days of workshops; keynotes; and networking sessions.

This year's theme was I.M.P.A.C.T. striving to cover the following areas:

MaRS Business of Aging Summit 2012

The Business of Aging: Wellness in the Workplace A very important topic for our age (pardon the pun). Type A Events was thrilled to once again work with the insightful folks at MaRS Discovery District on their recent Business of Aging Summit 2012. Held in the main MaRS Auditorium, this packed agenda included two keynotes, an Innovation Showcase, 2 panels, 5 Innovation Vignettes, a case study, and an innovation implementation facilitation session. Did I mention this was a 1-day Summit? Our 2 keynotes Dr. Joseph Coughlin, Director, MIT AgeLab and Geoff Mulgan, CEO, NESTA (UK) book-ended this incredible day. Thanks to Dr. Alain Sotto, Chief Physician-Wellness Division at the OPG and Occupational Medical Consultant at the TTC for his thought-provoking case study; and to all our Innovators who are leading the charge in the new understanding of aging in the workplace.

Post-Event: MaRS Discovery District: Nitric Oxide Symposium

Thank you again to the wonderful folk at MaRS Discovery District and at NeurAxon for their fantastic work during the recent Nitric Oxide and other Gaseous Neurotransmitter (NOX) Symposium. The gathering of 20 of the leading minds in the field, including Noble Laureate Dr. Ferid Murad, was the first of it's kind in Toronto-are we next in line for the crown of Canada's premiere BioTech city? I hope so--if only to have more quality Symposiums such as NOX, and in order for there to be opportunity for me to work with this great collection of people again!

Conference Planning: Ontario Working Group for Early Psychosis Intervention

Congratulations to the Ontario Working Group for Early Intervention in Psychosis (OWGEPI) for another successful Conference. The OWGEPI is an organization made up of employees that work for Early Psychosis Intervention programs across Ontario.

Type A Events was once again honoured to be coordinating this educational and fundamental Conference. The work the OWGEPI does at this Conference has practical applications to those within the Mental Health field--from clients, to family members, to doctors and case managers.

This year's theme of Social Inclusion brought Social Inclusion in Mental Health expert Dr. David Morris from England as our keynote speaker.

The workshops, keynote, and plenary session were filled with interesting debate and lively conversation. What a special group of dedicated people.

This was my 5th year organizing this Conference, and I hope for 5, 10, 15 years more!

Quick Tip: Conferences

If your conference runs over more than one day, be sure to have regularly scheduled breaks and at least one 'social activities' night. Even if you have a tight schedule and an end goal for the conference, try to give people some time to socialize. We all know that many of history's greatest deals have been made with a relaxed chat over a nice bottle of Merlot.
